Facts about the University District
Home of the University of Washington
The University District (commonly, the U District) refers to an eclectic mix of neighborhoods surrounding the University of Washington (UW) campus in Seattle, Washington. The UW moved from Downtown Seattle to its present location in 1893 and the first university building was built in 1895.
In 1892 electric trolley tracks were laid on what is now University Way and the area soon began to be called “University Station” because of the electric trolley’s heated waiting house at the corner of what is now NE 42nd Street.
Unless you travelled by trolley, in early decades of the U. District, Downtown was a trek, a boat, and a horse cart ride away. Due to these early transportation difficulties, the U. District was fairly self-sufficient Construction of family homes increased in the early 1900s, as did churches, theaters, stores, and a YMCA.
Much of the charm of the U District can be found simply strolling the neighborhoods within the district including University Park, Greek Row, University Heights and the Brooklyn Addition; as well as the Main, West, and South campuses of the University of Washington.
The University District is home to a lot of theaters, restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes, coffee shops, urban shopping areas, and historic homes. The gorgeous grounds of UW include historic buildings, gardens, sprawling green spaces, and, in spring, blossoming cherry trees. University Way, or “The Ave,” is a popular gathering place, with lots of cute indie eateries and funky little shops.
Area attractions include the stellar collections at the Henry Art Gallery and the Burke Museum. Acclaimed dance, theater and music performances are held at Meany Hall. And those looking for outdoor activities will feel at home kayaking on Lake Union or Portage Bay, biking the Burke-Gilman trail, or catching a football game at Husky Stadium.
